On your iPad:

At the same time, press both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button, and quickly release both buttons.  Your screen will flash, indicating the image has been captured.

If running a current version of iOS, you will see the screen shrink into an icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen.  You can tap that icon to mark-up, edit, and share the screen capture.

Screen captures are also saved to the All Photos and Screenshots albums in your Photos app on your iPad.
