How To Take A Screen Shot (a.k.a. Screen Capture)
On your Mac:
There are four key combinations to capture your screen, each combination performs a slightly different function. To capture the screen, or part of it, press and hold all keys in the given key combination. If capturing a portion of your screen, once you press the key combination, you'll notice the cursor becomes a set of cross hairs. Click and drag the cross hairs to highlight your selection. (⌘ is the Command key on your keyboard, ⇧ is the Shift key on your keyboard, ^ is the Control key on your keyboard)
Capture the entire screen, and save the capture to an image file on your Desktop: ⌘ ⇧ 3
Capture the entire screen to the clipboard (you can paste the screen capture into any document, email, et cetera): ⌘ ⇧ ^ 3
Capture the selected portion of the screen, and save the capture to an image file on your Desktop: ⌘ ⇧ 4

On your iPad:
At the same time, press both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button, and quickly release both buttons. Your screen will flash, indicating the image has been captured.
If running a current version of iOS, you will see the screen shrink into an icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen. You can tap that icon to mark-up, edit, and share the screen capture.
Screen captures are also saved to the All Photos and Screenshots albums in your Photos app on your iPad.
